Feminist Theater began in the 1970’s with the purpose of addressing the political and social discrepancies against women in a world that was built on patriarchal conventions. This branch of theater acted as a contemporary and creative medium through which women could dynamically express the issues that they experienced in their lives. Ultimately, feminist theater emboldened many women, providing them with a forum, a voice, and a language in which to communicate ideas to an international audience.
I feel that Trifles is indeed a Feminist play, seeing as the key aspects of the plot highlight the disadvantages that women were left at in the years prior to earning their right to vote and engage in active political roles. Throughout the development of the plot, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale band together to defend another woman against a judicial system that is slanted by patriarchal bias. This work even goes so far as to test their resolve to help a fellow female in the face of their own contrary morals and beliefs. They help Mrs. Wright with full acknowledgement of how wrong and unlawful Wrights’ crime is and the blatant immorality of lying to save a murderer. I think that their actions speak to the social struggles of women and to the strength of the overall collective feminist identity.
